The Senior Non-Commissioned Officer Staff Initial Course (SSIC)

The aim of the SSIC is to equip adult Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCO) and Warrant Officers (WO) with the basic skills to fulfil their duties on ATC squadrons as uniformed staff.

Course outline

Instruction will be given on the following topics:

  • Instructional Technique
  • Drill and Ceremonial
  • Corps Drugs Policy
  • Organisation of the RAF and ATC
  • RAF Sergeants’ Mess procedures
  • Dress Regulations and Deportment
  • Health and Safety
  • Discipline and the role of the Adult SNCO/WO
  • Control of Equipment Inventories
  • Welfare

Attendees must attain a minimum standard in order to confirm their appointment as an Adult SNCO or WO is confirmed.

Note to attendees: Pre-training regarding drill

Accepting that this course constitutes your initial training, you musthave some knowledge and practical experience of drill prior toattending. If you have little or no practical experience, you shouldconsult a uniform member of your squadron staff (or Wing training staffif no squadron staff are available), to ensure you get the relevanttraining prior to your arrival. Your Squadron Commander or, in theirabsence, your Wing Staff Officer, will have a proforma to sign prior toyour attendance on the course, confirming that some training has takenplace. We do not expect guardsman standards, but an ability to marcheffectively in a group, keep step and be able to carry out the basicstatic and quick-time movements will be expected from day one of thecourse.

Apart from ensuring there is a common standard at the outset of the course, prior experience will leave you less stressed and free to concentrate on the other training elements.
